Tate’s Final Resting Place

We scattered Tate’s ashes at the cabin – his favorite place.

I know some people like to keep their dog’s ashes but I knew I wouldn’t ever let him go if we kept them.  So we sprinkled them from the top of the hill, down his path to the lake, along the shore and in the water.

From the cabin, I could see four ashy splotches in the water, like ghostly pawprints.  I kept checking to see if they were still there, like I used to check on him to make sure he was still there.  But when we were all packed to go, I couldn’t leave them there.  It was too much like leaving him there alone (crazy, I know.)  So I went and dispersed them, “Go play, my good smart boy.”

I cried a lot but I feel better knowing he’s now part of his favorite place in the whole world.

  1. Oh Jan! My heart breaks for you and Rick, but I am so happy you were able to take the step you knew you needed to take to truly set Tate free. You had to give him his wings to start him on the path. When you took him back to the cabin, you really, truly, honest-to-God said “Go play, my good smart boy.”

Every time little sister Sam plays in that water, you will think of Tate guiding her and telling her how to be the best dog. I can’t think of a better way to honor your boy.

  3. Rick, Jan and little sister Sam,

How very touching. We know that Tate is in his favorite place and will watch over you all at the cabin. We were so taken with him on our trips to the beach in Chicago. He was quite the swimmer and a total ladies man. He definitely was a very good, smart boy.

    Take care of yourselves,

  4. Oh that had to be so tough. I know you’re glad you did it, and as bittersweet as it was, we are glad that Tate has found eternal peace. Your sweet boy sure deserves it.
